Tom's Trust Supports

Toynbee Hall's experience is that preventative work around thinking and behaviour, increasing
self-worth, motivation and achievement, can empower young people to pursue new
opportunities and move away from anti-social behaviour and criminal
activities.
49% of children in Tower Hamlets are living in poverty. Poverty impacts wellbeing and academic achievement;
teenage wellbeing is a significant predictor of GCSE achievement. We want young people to achieve their
potential and escape the cycle of poverty by increasing their skills, confidence and sense of identity
so that they can better engage with school and build positive relationships with their peers and families.

Tom’s Trust is currently supporting Toynbee Hall’s latest Youth Project "When We Speak". This new youth
activism project, is aimed at inspiring and enabling young people in East London to bring change.
As part of this project Toynbee Hall will be directly supporting young people between the ages 15 to 25
to run their own local project by providing grant money, training & coaching between October & Feburary.
There will be 12-20 direct beneficiaries working with the youth team intensively to develop projects for
change in their local community.

They aim to engage a further 150 young people to attend the workshops
and skills-sharing sessions that will take place twice a month. They will target a further 2000 young
people via a focus on achievements and opportunities on social media.
Tower Hamlets youth service are particularly engaged. The Head of Youth Work is keen to involve a looser
network of local youth organisations to reach out to more of the borough and this fits well with the
aims of the project - specifically the aim to breakdown ‘postcode wars’ and encourage mixing within
the borough.
